<text>Tito Enrique Cánepa Jiménez was born on September 21, 1916 in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican republic. Concerned about his participation in the political movement against the Trujillo dictatorship, his family sent him to New York City. He arrived in New York on May 27, 1935 at the age of 18.

During World War II, Cánepa was drafted into the U.S. Army on September 1, 1942. He became a U.S. citizen on December 11, 1942 while training as a Private at Camp Robinson in Arkansas. He rose to Technician Fifth Grade as an information specialist for Spanish instructional films in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the Photo graphic Center. He was the assistant director of several equipment training films sent to Latin America during the war. he married modern dancer Florence Lessing in 1944 and the couple had two children, Eric and Cathy. Honorably discharged on February 4, 1946, Cánepa joined the U.S. Army Pictorial Center after the war, where he would continue to work for over 20 years, becoming a producer for the Special Films Branch.

Cánepa's rebellion against the Trujillo dictatorship was part of his lifelong commitment for the defense of freedom. His household in Manhattan was a hub of frequent gatherings of anti-Trujillo Dominican exiles and he was in contact with those planning the Cayo Confites invasion. While working at the Pictorial Center, Cánepa used Radio Swan for anti-Trujillo programs. Cánepa also continued to work as a masterful and widely admired artist throughout his life. Cánepa's work received early recognition when it was exhibited in New York City in the 1950s, and also in the Dominican republic, despite the dictatorship. He died on February 11, 2014.</text>

<text>Dioris Valladares was born on August 14, 1916, in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic. On December 8, 1936, he sailed from Ciudad Trujillo (Santo Domingo) to New York on the steamship *Coamo* with his sister, Milagro to join their mother, two brothers, and two sisters, who were all living in East Harlem, New York. Working as a musician, he began touring the U.S. with various bands in 1939. During World War II, Valladares enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army at Fort Jay on Governor's Island on July 30, 1942. He entered active duty on August 13, 1942 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on November 28, 1945.

After the war, Valladares became a famous merengue singer, bandleader, composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist who made several hit records for Arsonia Records in the 1950s and 60s. He rose to prominence in New York City around 1950, singing merengues and playing the *güira* with bandleader Juanito Sanabria in the Club Caborrojeño. His nightclub success caught the attention of Arsonia Records executive, Rafael Pérez, who, assembled the seven-piece *Conjunto Tipico Cibaeno* with Ángel Viloria as an accordion player and bandleader. Together, Valladares and Viloria recorded many classic merengue albums which were sold throughout the United States, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the rest of Latin America. After the band split up, both musicians continued to have successful solo careers. Eventually, Valladares moved to Port Jefferson Station in Long Island to raise his family. He passed away on July 26, 2001. He was buried in Calverton national Cemetery.</text>

During WWII, Escalera enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 3, 1942. He served as a Technician 5th Grade in the 100th infantry Division, helping to supply ammunition to the front lines. In 1944, he was an infantry sergeant and led a platoon of 30 soldiers through Germany. Escalera was awarded the Silver Star Medal of gallantry in action while engaged in combat after saving the lives of his entire platoon in an ambush in Germany. Other decorations include two Presidential Unit Citations, two Combat Bronze Stars, a Combat Expert Infantry Badge, and a medal from the government of France for his role in the liberation of the Town of Bitche.

After his service in the military, he worked as a plant manager for the Heifetz Co., a manufacturer of lamp fixtures. In 1957, Escalera moved to Clinton, Connecticut when the company relocated. In Clinton, Escalera joined the American Legion where he became a volunteer assisting older veterans. As a result of his service to his community, Escalera was selected five times to the Board of Selectmen, worked with the town's Board of Ethics, the Affordable Housing Committee, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Historical Commission. He remained an advocate for Clinton's older citizens for more than three decades. In 1990, he received the Clinton Chamber of Commerce Annual Award of Distinction for Public Service; and in 1991, he received a Successful Aging award sponsored by Connecticut Community Care Inc., a nonprofit homecare organization for elderly and disabled people. Today he lives a quiet life with his family.</text>
